ANUgreen Seasonal Bird Surveys

The Australian National University Sustainability Office ANUgreen is preparing for its seasonal bird surveys, and we hope that YOU can volunteer! These surveys will be an important step in monitoring and protecting native birds in the ACT region. Experience not essential, and training will be provided.

4 seasonal surveys will be carried out during 2012–13 (January, April, July, October), with the first planned for Saturday 21st January 2012. The data collected will build on the Lower Sullivans Creek Catchment Ecological Survey and Life in the Suburbs project. Our proposed survey area will include sites in ANU, ANBG, CSIRO, National Museum of Australia, Black Mountain Peninsula, Civic West and parts of Turner.

As with past surveys, community learning will be an integral part. The Canberra Ornithologists Group (COG) has kindly agreed to provide us support. We will be teaming up COG experienced birdwatchers with 1-2 volunteers, to ensure a good learning process and quality data.

Surveys will be run from 8:00-11am. We will be using the 2-hectare, 20-min search method and datasheets from COG. There are 31 units across the study area, with 3 sites in each of them. Each team will complete 2 units, with the whole process taking approximately 2.5-3 hours. For more information, please visit the Canberra Ornithologists Group website: http://canberrabirds.org.au/

In return for your efforts, we shall provide a thankyou brunch to all volunteers.
